Rising to the challenge
Sure, we’ve done charity work before, but when it comes to completing large-scale sponsored fundraisers, we wanted to push the boundaries. And what better way than by jumping in the deep end with the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge?
With three climbs, 24 miles and 5200ft of ascent, it’s just shy of a marathon – uphill. Our goal was to complete the route in under 12 hours. But with the group’s hill-climbing abilities ranging from zero to… slightly above zero, it was all about digging in as a team, just like we do day in, day out, back at hap HQ.
Nerves and excitement spread across our 16-strong squad as we prepared for the ascent. But, motivated by our desire to raise a decent amount of money for Beechwood, we were more than ready!
A worthy cause
Based in Stockport, Beechwood Cancer Care Centre is an incredible charity that’s close to our team’s hearts. Although they’re local to us, Beechwood operates all across the North West, providing care at every stage of the illness and extending this support to family and loved ones.
Funding has been hard to come by since the pandemic, so we were eager to raise as much as possible to contribute to the amazing work that they do. With a funding target of £2,500, we got to work on spreading the word (and hitting the gym) in preparation for the big day on 28th March.
How it unfolded
5.30am: Pitch black, freezing cold, pouring with rain… We’re shivering all over, but we’re kitted up and ready to roll.
8:15am (ish): Ingleborough (peak one), complete! The sun came up somewhere in the world, but it certainly didn’t feel like it on this misty Yorkshire hillside.
11:00am: 12 miles down, 12 to go – we’re halfway there!
Things got a little hazy after this, but despite the questionable weather and a few injuries along the way, all 16 of us completed the route in under 12 hours to beat the challenge. The best part? We almost doubled our £2,500 target for Beechwood!
Here’s what our team had to say about this phenomenal achievement:
“I really enjoyed completing the Yorkshire three peaks, it was more challenging than I expected. The feeling of accomplishment at the end made the feeling of raising money for charity even more rewarding.” – Jamie, Staff Support Supervisor
“This was a challenge, but I am so glad I completed it.” – Molly, Staffing Manager
“It was hap-tastic.” – Gavin, Finance Manager
Still time to donate
Didn’t get a chance to contribute? Don’t worry. As our charity of the year, this won’t be the last time we’ll be raising money for Beechwood. You can also head straight to their website to show your support.
